They say data never sleeps or that data is the new gold (or oil/water/soil, take your pick). Well, a company called Domo Inc (DOMO US) produces a Data Never Sleeps chart every year to show, according to them, how much data is generated every minute of the day on the internet. As they say; In an increasingly digital world intensified by the outbreak of COVID-19, 2020 has introduced a new era where technology and data have taken more significant roles in our daily lives. As we learn to adapt to this new era, data never sleeps. Data is constantly being generated in ad clicks, reactions on social media, shares, rides, transactions, streaming content, and so much more. When examined, this data can help you better understand a world that is moving at increasing speeds.
A few weeks ago they produced the eighth edition of Data Never Sleeps. So, in 2020, here are some of the household names, and according to Domo, how much data they generated EVERY MINUTE of the day so far this year.
Netflix users stream over 404,000 hours of video / Instagram users post 347,000 stories / YouTube users upload 500 hours of video / Twitter gains nearly 320 new users / Consumers spend $1m online / Microsoft teams connect over 52,000 users / Zoom hosts over 208,000 participants in meetings / Facebook users share 150,000 messages and upload 147,000 photos / Over 69,000 users apply for a job on LinkedIn / 28 tracks are added to Spotify / Amazon ships nearly 6,700 packages / WhatsApp users share over 41.5 million messages.
Pretty amazing we think. Also of interest was global internet population growth. In 2014 the internet reached 3 billion people, today it reaches over 4.5 billion, just shy of 60% of the global population. The active users have increased nearly 3% since January ’19, and of these, 4.2 billion are active on mobile and over 3.8 billion use social media.
