The Daily Update - Impeachment

US Democrats yesterday introduced a resolution to impeach President Trump for a second time, setting up a vote later this week unless Vice President Mike Pence uses his constitutional authority to remove the president. The resolution, led by Representatives Jamie Raskin, Ted Lieu and David Cicilline, charges the current president with inciting the violence in the capital on Jan. 6th. It seeks to both remove Trump from the presidency and prevent him from ever holding office again. On a conference call the Majority Leader Steny Hoyer said that the house will take up the resolution tomorrow.

However, according to reports Vice President Mike Pence has no plans to remove Trump and the two have agreed to work together for the remainder of Trump’s term. Trump also has no plans to resign before Biden is sworn in. This was the first time the two men had spoken since Trump’s supporters stormed one of America’s most iconic buildings a few days ago in a bid to overthrow November's presidential election result.

The news of the impending impeachment comes as the Pentagon authorizes the National Guard to deploy up to 15,000 troops to Washington, D.C., ahead of President-elect Biden’s inauguration on Jan. 20. The FBI has warned of plans for armed protests in both the capital and across all 50 states, fuelling fears of more violence.
