The Daily Update: Calorific Greggs but responsible

We wrote a couple of weeks ago about how the humble avocado, although being very good for you and your heart, is very poor for the health of the planet. A couple of days after writing that Daily Update, a headline flashed across our screens that Greggs shares had risen on the back of a stronger than expected sales recovery. In the interest of fairness, we thought we would investigate just how bad some of the items on the Greggs menu were for your health..

We think that it’s safe to say that most of us have had a Greggs sausage roll at some point, and thoroughly enjoyed it even though we know it has zero nutritional value. At 360 Kcals the said sausage roll is one of the less calorific items on the menu. So, as is tradition, in reverse order, some of the highest calorie foods at Greggs are: a standard iced doughnut 390-440 kcals (depending on flavour); chicken/steak bake 450 kcals; tuna crunch sandwich 520 kcals; chocolate muffin 570 kcals; and a club Mexican bandit baguette, a whopping 660 kcals. Even if you do not give two hoots for calories, it is worthwhile taking a note of the fat content. Greggs Cornish pasty has 31.5g of fat. Given that the average woman should aim for no more than 70g of fat and the average man 95g per day, that’s a lot.

Earlier this year the company launched the Greggs Pledge in which it announced ten things that it would do to help make the world a better place by 2025. These included: having 30% of the items on its shelves as healthier options; using 100% renewable electricity to be energy carbon neutral; to have a strong responsible sourcing strategy in place that, amongst other things, promises to not buy products that cause deforestation as well as being careful how it procures paper products along with anything containing palm.

Have a healthy day!!
